All 10 acute care hospital campuses in the Steward Health Care System were awarded an “A” grade in the Fall 2014 update to the Hospital Safety Score, which rates how well hospitals protect patients from accidents, errors, injuries and infections. The Hospital Safety Score is compiled under the guidance of the nation’s leading experts on patient safety and is administered by The Leapfrog Group, an independent industry watchdog.

    Steward Health Care System LLC announced today that at the end of the year it will transition care at Quincy Medical Center (QMC) to a more sustainable outpatient health care delivery network in Quincy. The new outpatient delivery system will include: a new 24-hour Emergency Department, a separately sited state-of-the-art urgent care center, multi-specialty clinic in Quincy, radiological services including X-Ray, mammography, CT, and ultrasound, as well as a multi-point transportation plan.

    St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center became the first hospital in New England to use the Lutonix 035 Drug Coated Balloon PTA Catheter, a new device to treat patients with peripheral artery disease. The device will offer patients the ability to undergo endovascular procedures to treat peripheral vascular disease that “leave nothing behind” and offers new hope for patients who suffer from symptomatic peripheral vascular disease or are at risk for lower extremity amputations.

    The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) released results of the Medicare Pioneer Accountable Care Organization (ACO) pilot program. In the second year of the program, Steward generated $19.2 million of savings for the Medicare program, the best performance among Massachusetts Pioneers and the second best performance of all Pioneer ACOs in the nation.

    Norwood Hospital has joined hospitals across the Commonwealth of Massachusetts by going 100% smoke-free throughout the campus, effective October 1, 2014. The new policy prohibits use of all tobacco products, including cigarettes and e-cigarettes, on the Norwood Hospital campus as well as satellite locations.
